The port city of Piraeus in Greece lies on the Saronic Gulf in the Attica region of the country and forms part of the Athens urban area, with the centre of Athens located some 12 km from the port. The centre of Piraeus is generally congested with traffic and tends not to be place where tourists would go. Popular attractions on the island include the Monastery of Episkopi which was first thought to be an ancient temple of the God Apollo but is now known to have the signs of Roman mausoleum architecture. It was built in the 3rd century AD and was modified to a Christian church, complete with a dome and bell tower, in the 17th century.
