Porto Empedocle is a port town in Italy, on the coast of the Strait of Sicily. The town has a population of over 17,000 inhabitants and the primary industries are agriculture, fishing, ironworking, pharmaceuticals and rock salt refining.
Porto Empedocle was founded as the port of the ancient city of Girgenti under the name of Marina di Girgenti, and has since been an important fishing and trade port in south-western Sicily.
However important the port activities are for Porto Empedocle’s economy, the town is also benefiting from being a tourist resort nowadays, with sandy beaches stretching over 3 km of golden sand and crystal clear sea.
Also to see is the Torre Carlo V, a tower that was formerly known as fortification Torre del Caricatore di Girgenti until it was restored by Emperor Charles V in the 16th century.
