Pozzuoli is a city of the province of Napoli, in the Italian region of Campania. It's the main city on the Phlegrean peninsula. Pozzuoli was founded in 530 BC. It was then renowned as an important trading and military port, today it is still a busy little port. This is a beautiful part of Southern Italy, an amazing area with a wealth of history and archaeology at your fingertips. Not only was Pozzuoli the first Port to the Roman Empire, it also boasts stunning scenery, sandy beaches, beautiful lakes and wonderful walks. The city is located in the Campi Flegrei volcanic area and has long suffered from volcanic and earthquake activity. From August 1982 to December 1984 the city experienced hundreds of tremors and bradyseismic activity which reached a peak on October 4, 1983 damaging 8,000 buildings in the city center and dislocating 36,000 people, many permanently. The events raised the sea bottom 6 feet and rendered the Bay too shallow for large craft.
