The burgh
of Stromness is Orkney's major seaport. It first attracted
sailors for the fine anchorage provided by Hamnavoe and
has provided a haven for mariners for centuries, being
the last port of call before many a transatlantic voyage.
In the 1620s the bishop of Orkney issued feus on the site
of the modern day town. the narrow winding thoroughfare
is a feature which is particularly pleasing to visitors
with houses gable-end towards the street and the seafront,
the latter having many private jetties.
