Baltiysk Port belongs to a small town at the top of a very long, narrow strait bordering the Baltic Sea. Found on the northern part of the Vistula Split, a peninsula stretch of land that separates Vistula Lagoon from Gdansk Bay, Baltiysk Port represents Russia’s westernmost point. The town is perhaps most well-known for being the naval base of the Baltic Fleet, as well as a ferry port on the route to St. Petersburg. In the past 100 years Baltiysk Port has been occupied by both Sweden and Germany during different periods of conflict throughout the Soviet Union’s history. Russia claimed the seaport town from Germany directly after the second world war, though it does still have ferry routes to Germany; the crossing to the town of Sassnitz is one of Baltiysk Port’s most commonly used routes. There are also crossings to Vistula Bay and Gdansk Bay departing fairly regularly, though during off season the crossing times can become erratic so it is worthwhile checking for live updates.
