Bowen Island, one of many offshore islets in the Canadian province of British Columbia, is a 50-square-kilometre landmass and municipality in the Howe Sound. Regarded as a popular day out from the city of Vancouver, it lies just 20 minutes away by ferry from the mainland.
Relaxation is paramount on Bowen; the island is predominantly forested, appealing mostly to outdoorsy types. Alongside peace and quiet, you will find a wide range of nature-related activities available including mountain biking across the hilly, verdant terrain and down winding paths. Bicycles can be rented from many shops in Vancouver and easily taken across on the ferry, ideal for both families and solo cyclists. Of the ample hiking opportunities, the most popular route takes you up Mount Gardner, the highest peak reaching 720 metres, affording memorable views of Vancouver and the Howe Sound islands at the summit.
Whatever the theme of your trip: couples retreat, family holiday or a jaunt with friends, Bowen has the excursions to suit. An afternoon of paddle boarding and keeping an eye out for dolphins can be preceded by a round of golf on a top quality, picturesque course. Fitness centres are scattered around the island, complete with yoga classes and sumptuous breakfast buffets overlooking the lush forests and glistening lakes. The arts and culture are deeply intertwined in the fabric of Bowen Island; it’s the 5th most artistic community in Canada, based on the quantity of inhabitants who work in the field. Therefore, you can escape the elements by wandering inside the several galleries and boutiques, found primarily in Artisan Square.
With up to 15 sailings every day lasting approximately 20 minutes, reaching Bowen Island by ferry couldn’t be easier. If you’re based on the mainland looking for an unforgettable day trip in the Howe Sound, head to Horseshoe Bay, the gateway to the island situated to the west of North Vancouver.
