George Town Guide

George Town Ferry Port

Located on the east coast of Great Exuma Island, one of the largest isles in a chain of over 300 that form the Bahaman district of Exuma, is the seafront capital of George Town. Featuring palm-lined beaches overlooking a narrow inlet of the crystal clear North Atlantic Ocean, the small settlement is a magnet for yachters who drift along the balmy northern tropics. It’s a prime location for scuba divers too; the shore pitted with underwater caves and coral reefs that beg to be explored. The natural beauty of the island, including sweeping hillside views of the impossibly-blue Bahaman coast, means it is easy to overlook George Town’s fascinating past. Originally inhabited by Lucayan Indians, famed for being the first North American settlers encountered by Christopher Columbus, the area of George Town was a hotspot for 17th Century pirates looking to hide in the island coves. George Town port can be found to the south of the city centre. It sits on a narrow promontory surrounded by the glittering waters of Elizabeth Harbour, directly adjacent to the narrow and largely uninhabited Stocking Island. Only one route currently operates from the port. A Bahamas Ferries service sails twice a week to the Bahaman capital of Nassau, a relatively long, northbound journey that skates alongside the collection of cays that streak over 80 miles across the sea.
