Situated on the north west coast of the Peloponnese, Patras is the capital of western Greece and with its major ferry port provides the primary gateway for connecting Greece with Italy and Western Europe. Patras consists of a passenger ferry port for handling sea traffic between Greece and other countries and also a commercial port. Trieste is a city and seaport in north-eastern Italy situated towards the end of a narrow strip of land lying between the Adriatic Sea and Italy's border with Slovenia. Once a very influential and powerful centre of politics, literature, music, art and culture under Austrian-Hungarian dominion, its importance fell into decline towards the end of the 20th century and therefore often forgotten by tourists who head to the better known Italian cities of Rome and Milan. Trieste however remains a very charming underestimated city with a quiet and lovely almost Eastern European atmosphere, several pubs and cafes, some stunning architecture and a beautiful sea view.
