Thira is the official name of the island of Santorini, Greece and is located in the southern Aegean Sea, about 200 km southeast of mainland Greece. Thira is essentially what remained after an enormous volcanic explosion that destroyed the earliest settlements on a formerly single island, and created the current geological caldera.
