Trieste is a city and seaport in north-eastern Italy situated towards the end of a narrow strip of land lying between the Adriatic Sea and Italy's border with Slovenia. Once a very influential and powerful centre of politics, literature, music, art and culture under Austrian-Hungarian dominion, its importance fell into decline towards the end of the 20th century and therefore often forgotten by tourists who head to the better known Italian cities of Rome and Milan. Trieste however remains a very charming underestimated city with a quiet and lovely almost Eastern European atmosphere, several pubs and cafes, some stunning architecture and a beautiful sea view.
Durres is the second largest city in Albania and home to the country's most popular ferry port. Located on the west coast of the country and about 30km west of the capital city, Durres ferry port is the ideal gateway between Albania and Italy and popular with tourists and commercial traffic. This Adriatic port city has had services operated by numerous ferry companies over the years including to Ancona and Trieste but the connection with Bari seems to be the most popular. As for Durres itself, the 10km of beach is an obvious draw for tourists and whilst it is crowded during the summer months, there is at least plenty of accommodtion available.
